italki vs Preply: an honest verdict after testing both
When you decide to learn a language with a real teacher, you quickly face the same question: italki or Preply? Both platforms connect you with native teachers. Both have thousands of reviews. And yet, they represent two completely opposite philosophies. Choosing the wrong one for your profile can genuinely derail your learning.
I tested both on real language learning goals. Here is my honest assessment, without the sales pitch.
"italki gives you total freedom. Preply gives you structure. One isn't better than the other. They're built for different people."
Two opposite models
italki
- No subscription, pay per lesson
- Book any time, cancel up to 24h before
- Community tutors from $3/h
- Requires self-discipline to stay consistent
Preply
- Fixed weekly slot, consistency built in
- All-in-one classroom, materials, tracking
- Certified teachers with structured programs
- Monthly commitment, higher average price
italki works like a marketplace: you browse teacher profiles, read reviews, book a slot, and pay per lesson. No ongoing commitment. If your schedule changes, you simply stop booking.
Preply works by subscription: you choose a teacher, set a weekly recurring slot, and pay monthly. Credits expire after 28 days. The model is deliberately designed to turn learning into a habit, not an occasional activity.
Pricing: a real difference
On italki, community tutors (native speakers without formal teaching training) start from around $3–$5/h. Certified teachers with pedagogical credentials range from $11 to $33/h. You only pay for lessons you actually take.
On Preply, the average observed price is $16–$33/h. Community tutors exist but are far less numerous than on italki. The platform takes an 18–33% commission from the teacher, which is factored into the displayed price.
Budget tip
The teachers: who are they really?
italki has two teacher categories. Community tutors are native speakers who help you practice conversation, with no formal training, but often fantastic for unlocking your speaking. Professional teachers have certified pedagogical training: structured lessons, exercises, personalized follow-up.
Preply only has certified teachers. The selection process is stricter, and all teachers go through an onboarding with pedagogical guidelines. In practice, the average level of structure is slightly higher on Preply, but so is the price.
One important note: the quality variance is real on both platforms. On italki, a 5-star tutor at $4/h can be as effective as a $25/h teacher on Preply.Always do a trial lesson before committing. Both platforms offer them at reduced rates.
The learning experience
Preply's integrated classroom is genuinely impressive. The virtual whiteboard, shared documents, vocabulary exercises and progress tracking all live in one interface. You open the app, click "Join lesson" and you're in. Zero time lost connecting tools.
italki is simpler: lessons happen on Zoom, Skype or Google Meet. You coordinate directly with your teacher on materials. This gives more flexibility but requires more initiative, especially if you want a structured program rather than just conversation practice.
Who should choose which?
Choose italki if…
- You want flexibility above all
- You're on a tight budget
- You're a self-directed learner
- You want conversation practice (not a full curriculum)
- Your schedule varies week to week
Choose Preply if…
- You know you need structure to stay consistent
- You want a full curriculum, not just conversation
- You tend to cancel lessons without a financial commitment
- You want a professional, all-in-one experience
- Budget is secondary to results

Preply
8.3/10
Preply is the platform for people who actually want to progress, not just sign up. The subscription format turns learning into a habit, and the all-in-one ecosystem makes every lesson effective from minute one. It's the best investment I've made this year for my language learning.
